UN News Centre Reports (27 May 2009)

DARFUR: dozens of Sierra Leonean police officers join UN-African Union mission UNAMID peacekeepers on patrol

27 May 2009 – Dozens of police officers from Sierra Leone today joined the United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission, known as UNAMID, in the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan.

Tomorrow, a further 22 Sierra Leoneans will join the 40 who arrived today in El Fasher, including 10 women, and UNAMID intends to deploy them across Darfur following a two-week induction programme.

Meanwhile, the mission reported today that the security situation in the area is relatively calm, having carried out nearly 70 military patrols and 85 police patrols to ensure civilian safety in the past 24 hours.

Yesterday, UNAMID evacuated 19 seriously injured people following clashes, between Sudanese Government forces and armed elements of the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), earlier this week in the North Darfur town of Umm Baru. The Mission also delivered medical supplies to the area.

The violence claimed more than 50 lives and forced hundreds to flee their homes, the Mission said in a news release.

UNAMID was established by the Security Council in 2007 to protect civilians in Darfur, where an estimated 300,000 people have been killed and another 2.7 million have been forced from their homes since fighting erupted in 2003, pitting rebels against Government forces and allied Janjaweed militiamen.

Personal Entry

My cousin and I had spent the entire Memorial weekend researching.  On Sunday after church we went to Barnes and Nobles to look for current published books about the issues in Darfur (see: Internationa/Current Affairs), and then we went to the library to search for new sources (there were not many books in the Carlsbad Cole Library on the genocide and war crimes in Africa).  We spent 6 hours of Memorial day in Vinaka's.  Noey read essays from the Journal of International Affairs from Columbia University while I worked on my homework.  We discussed the case against al-Bashir as well as the issues with the land.  We tried to understand the persecutors point of view.  We came across information that we did not understand.  The numbers of deaths and how unreliable the sources were.  And contemplated the early history and why the British would want to create two confederations.  We... we stumped... and we realized that there is so much more to this civil war than the public is aware of.  And after this, I decided not to give up on this research, that I would gather up all the information I could on the current and past... and I will analyse it and present it to my peers in a way that will open their eyes to a greater understanding.

One of my school projects is to to create an educational CBT Video.  I spent nearly 3 hours yesterday brainstorming my campaign and how I will use this project as a jumpstart.  I'm not sure what the expectations for this project is, but I am putting more effort into researching this than I have ever did in any past projects.  I could have easily chosen a no brainer topic, but I realized I would be a fool to continue my life doing meaningless projects just for benefit of a grade.  Anyway, my documentation for this project is many pages long, and I can't wait to get this production started. The fact that 1) this project is for school, 2) the topic is something I am passionate about, and 3) my classmates will see this video... makes every minute of my time worth it... and the fact that after I complete this video and have it tested, I will be able to post it online for my peers to see... hopefully they get it... hopefully they learn something of value.

Beauty for ashes.

"A little one shall become a
thousand,
And a small one a strong
nation." (Isaiah 60:22)

..................................................................................

I see the king of glory
Coming down the clouds with fire
The whole earth shakes, the whole earth shakes
I see his love and mercy
Washing over all our sin
The people sing, the people sing
Hosanna, hosanna
Hosanna in the highest
I see a generation
Rising up to take the place
With selfless faith, with selfless faith
I see a new revival
Staring as we pray and seek
We're on our knees, we're on our knees
Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like you have loved me
Break my heart for what is yours
Everything I am for your kingdom's cause
As I walk from earth into eternity

-Brooke Fraser, Hosanna
